The WBA’s goals for 2008

The Warrenton Business Association’s focus for 2008 is on improving the city’s entrances on U.S. Highway 101, spiffing up downtown and expanding and improving the annual Old-Fashioned Fourth celebration, which was held for the first time last year on Independence Day.

The top three items on this list will be given primary focus while the others will be more long-term goals.

· Gateway improvements: The city’s two main entrances or gateways will be improved, with weed-control maintenance. City signs could be illuminated using solar-panel technology.

· Downtown improvements: Possibilities here including hiring a business that would install and care for freestanding or hanging plant and flower baskets, finding a way to improve downtown lighting and developing a uniform downtown improvement plan that could include benches, awnings, wine keg planters, etc.

· Old-Fashioned Fourth: The group will expand and improve the planning for this annual event, held for the first time last year. Members will work more closely with other agencies and individuals, such as the city, the police department, parade organizer Gillian Maggert, and the Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce.

· Event center: Begin the process of building or acquiring a multipurpose building, perhaps at the Hammond Marina, where land is expected to become available in 2013.

· Skate park: Begin the planning process for a city skate park and involve the parks committee in the planning and funding process.

· Tourist-oriented web site with business links: Develop a new site or expand on this web site to increase Warrenton’s visibility in the region and draw shoppers and tourists here. Each of the city’s business license holders would be allowed a free web page that would be linked to the main site.

· Advertising campaign: Run a series of ads in the local media featuring all the shopping and dining opportunities in Warrenton.

· Community newsletters: Develop a community-based newsletter featuring local businesses, WBA-sponsored events, business meetings and other items to increase participation in the WBA, boost economic development and make citizens and/or businesses more aware of opportunities in the community.

· City Hall landscaping: Since it is an icon for the city, it should look groomed and professional with improved landscaping and removal of rocks from the flower beds. A new sign, designating it as Warrenton City Hall, could be installed with the possibility of using an attention-getting LED-type changeable sign.
